Pottermore has been announced!

23 Jun

So JK Rowling’s been teasing us ALL week on youtube with a mysterious page filled with a countdown and abunch of virtual owls that grew and grew in flock size as the countdown came closer to it’s date. Today, her announcement has been revealed! Apparently her (along with the help of Sony) have designed a new website (www.pottermore.com) dedicated to give little extra tidbits and facts and possibly fancy cutout animations with instrumental music to go along with the story for readers to use while reading their Potter novels with the billions of fans around the world. “Pottermore is a free website that builds an exciting online experience around the reading of the Harry Potter books.”

Its funny because  a few years back she meantioned she will make a Potter Encyclopedia that would explain all the little tids bits in the book as well as all the tidbits she never explained (for example: how a Horcrux is actually made). This website seems to be a combination of not only that wizarding world encyclopedia but what I hope is more of those fancy cutout illustrations that go along with the books. The site also seems to be a plugin to buy Harry Potter audio books, eBooks, and so forth. No clue yet about other Harry Potter merchandise but I get the feeling Rowling isnt about to try and sell us Mugs and “I love Hufflepuff” T-shirts (hell that’s what Potter Island is for in Orlando). Knowing her she’s going to keep this site to strictly educational and reading materials as she wants the joy of reading to be spread across the world. 🙂 gotta love JK.

Here’s the news report that shows the original site design and countdown clock:

On the site it say’s to come back on July 31st (aka Harry’s Birthday) to find out how you can get the chance to enter Pottermore early. In the video she left a hint to “follow the Owl” so a select few may enter the site early, at which point the shadow of a mysterious owl flies across a zoomed page in one of the harry potter books. I’m not sure if this is another cryptic hint, think I’m going to take another look at that page and figure out where it’s from. Or maybe it’s on the actual site itself (we all know R[owl]ings seems to be have been obsessed with this majestic nocturnal bird since day one and has since become a sort of mascot for the Harry Potter series).

Personally I was hoping for a new book, or maybe a new series (The adult life of our favorite Hogwarts alumni or the Potters children..? maybe?). Instead it’s a website. No book. No super special awesome new animated tv show. No rewrites of the original books from the perspective of anyone else .. (Kind of a cool idea from Meyer I guess tho I doubt it would really work for the Potter series).
My only issue is the website itself has a box that says “Pottermore is open to all in October. Leave us your email address now and we’ll notify you when registration has opened.” and theres a huge button that says to Submit your email but someone forgot to add the box to type it in – err…. REALLY?! either someone can’t do html or there was a limit to how many people can get notified and it filled up within the first 5 minites. Eitherway it’s alittle dissapointing but hopefully SOMEONE will notice asap and address this most crucial issue… XD

Where's the box to type my email???

Where's the box to type my email???

I’m imagining Rowling sitting at home looking at the counter for number of people who have signed up still being ZERO and thinking – “This is Bullocks (or whatever angry British people say when angry)! Does no one care about Harry, Hermione, and Ron anymore..? Was my marketing not good enough? Were the fan’s THAT dissapointed in my announcement..? Coulda sworn I had abuncha followers on twitter…. “No Rowling. We love you, and your idea is (granted not what we were hoping for) but an amazing idea at that.. just seems someone forgot to write those 1 extra lines of coding… FIX IT ASAP!!! >_<

I found some press screenshots of the site (click here to see the pottermore main hub). It seems to keep track of what the users are reading, where they are in the books, assigns them a house (Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Slytherin), how many point’s they’ve earned for their house, total housepoints, online goblin banking, along with other wizard lover achievements & virtual items… it has tons of game mechanics but there dosn’t seem to be any games at all.  (yes, I know I left Gryffindor off the list. If you didn’t notice or weren’t bothered by that then your not a REAL fan; just me pointing out the PHONIES!!). The site follows us along the books and I’m assuming rewards us for the tidbits and facts we learn and discover. Maybe we’ll be taking trivia tests inbetween chapters…? Only time will tell.

Anyways, most excited as I’m sure other fan’s of the Harry Potter series are. Your the BEST Rowling. 🙂 thank you for the nonstop memories.
